About an easy 20 minute subway ride from Manhattan Midtown- Jackson Heights in Queens in a neighborhood that is rich in two very interesting cultures. Specifically the Indian/Bengali Culture reigns supreme along 74th street and it is even seeping beyond.
If you have ever been to India or Bangladesh (like I have), that street alone looks like it was cut out of one of those countries. This is truly a cultural experience, from jewelry shops, sweet shops and bakeries, and of course the fine dining.
The FOOD, OH! the FOOD - will make you weak at the knees, since real Indian/Bengali food is served. Grab a somosa or a kulfi on the go, or take a seat at one of the many fine dining restaurants in Jackson Heights. Generally a dinner meal can range from $10-$20 for a main course. You can expect the food to be amazing, and from my opinion better than what Manhattan Indian food can offer.
Queens is a bustling multicultural neighborhood with a big Indian, Bengali, Columbian, and Mexican population. It is great to get a feel of those cultures in its purest form. Jackson Heights also holds a happening nightlife with a large Gay and Lesbian night culture, too. But more on that later!
Walk down 74th street and around.
Shaheen Sweets for an Indian sweet tooth.
Jackson Diner is nothing like a diner, but a restaurant with mouth-watering dishes.
The Eagle cinema plays Bollywood movies on the big screen.
Precious jewelry and sari shops hold items from trendy to just extremely expensive.
Music shops pump the latest hindi and bengali beats.
It's Curry Time!
